And yes, Loti’s text does normally tend to be notes taken at the time, so is more or less what was said (though interpretation will inevitably have a personal slant), but direct quotes are in speech marks. Bridget did refer to ‘spiritual practice’ as much as ‘Buddhist practice’. I guess because the audience was made up of all levels of interest.
